John Fanning a.k.a. Massaccesi is a multidisciplinary artist not just focused on sound but also heavily in the visual and performance art fields. Embracing a DIY ethic from an early age Fanning has been a self-publishing ‘zine editor, university radio & live party DJ (touring three times fresh out of high school in Europe & Japan) and conceptual/experimental fashion designer concurrent to his main focus areas of visual art (primarily site-specific installations) & experimental performance. His release on Phthalo, “I Never Fall Apart Because I Never Fall Together,” takes a quote from Andy Warhol’s “Philosophy” book and is an example of his early attempts at mashing up abstract structure, lo-fi recording techniques & total irrelevance for anything hip. The CD is the only solo “professional” release for Massaccesi and for a few years now Fanning has followed a “no physical releases” policy for sound. For Fanning, abstract sound works will be used exclusively for live action and video work. Another sound project he is constantly overworking on called MassaKiss is a conceptual project which attempts to merge historical research, underground and commercial music culture, dance music clichés and total 4/4 structure. The MassaKiss project also has a “no physical” policy which hopes to find the next phase of music marketing, promotion and presentation.
